The Human Body Systems

11 major human body systemsThe human body consists of systems which we take lightly at times without giving proper care and consideration. After settling down in Australia, I was little bored and decided to take up a course in Aged Care.

During the course, I learned about human anatomy and systems which was never covered in my Information Technology degree. It was amazing to learn on how the systems work as a network in our body and their inter-dependencies.

After being certified as Assistant in Nursing (AIN), I did training in a Nursing Home for few months. I could interrelate the learning with the fragile aged people.

The 11 major human body systems are:

  1. Skeletal system: This covers bones which gives support to the body and its organs.
  2. Muscular system: This organ system covers the movement of the body with muscles.
  3. Nervous system: This system collects and processes information from the senses via nerves and the brain. It sends message and tells the muscles to contract to cause physical actions.
  4. Respiratory system: This system involves the lungs and the trachea to bring air into the body to sustain life
  5. Cardiovascular system: This system involves the heart, arteries and veins. Blood circulates through the body to carry oxygen and nutrients to organs and cells. It also carries waste products away from organs and cells
  6. Digestive system: This system processes the food we eat. Mouth, esophagus, stomach and intestines are the main components of this system to provide nutrients to sustain life. There are 2 types of digestion, chemical and mechanical.
  7. Excretory system: This system eliminates wastes from the body which includes the Urinary system
  8. Endocrine system: This system provides chemical communication within the body using hormones and it is important for our well-being
  9. Immune system: This system defends against disease-causing agents. It also includes the Lymphatic system
  10. Integumentary system: This system involves skin, hair, nails and exocrine glands
  11. Reproductive system: This system involves the sex organs which allows the opportunity to create offspring.
